Each one generates a different kind of question, with its own three levels and answer key.

Frequently asked questions

▸What money skills should a Grade 1 child have?

Recognising coin values, counting a small handful of coins, making an amount with coins, adding two prices, comparing amounts and working out the change from a dollar. Every sub-skill here covers one of those, and all of them stay under a dollar. Totalling three prices at once is a Grade 2 skill, so it waits for the Grade 2 page.

▸Why do these worksheets use cents instead of dollars and cents?

Because decimal money is a Year 4 skill, at both the English and the American standard. Grade 1 writes 60c, which is a number a child can count to; $0.60 is a decimal fraction and belongs to a later year. The Grade 3 and Grade 4 pages use the decimal form.

▸Do these worksheets use particular coins or notes?

No. Coins are named by their value, such as a 25c coin, rather than by a country's name for them, so the sheets work wherever a decimal currency is used. Every value is a multiple of five cents, which matches the coins most children handle first.

▸How do you teach a child to find change from a dollar?

Count up to the dollar instead of subtracting down. For a 70c item, count on thirty cents to reach one hundred cents. The Giving Change sub-skill drills exactly that, and the answer key lets a child check each one before moving on.

▸How many money questions should a Grade 1 sheet have?

Six to ten is plenty at this age, because each question is several counting steps. Use the question-count stepper to size it down, and press Shuffle for a completely fresh set at the same level tomorrow.
