Frequently asked questions
▸What time-telling skills should a Grade 1 child have?
Reading and writing o'clock and half past times, saying them both ways, telling which of two times is earlier, and naming the days of the week and months of the year. That is what these five sub-skills cover, with quarter past and quarter to added as a stretch.
▸Why is there no elapsed time on these sheets?
Because working out how long something lasted, or what time it will be after an hour and a quarter, is a Grade 3 skill in most curricula. Putting it on a Grade 1 page makes the page look harder than the grade on the label. The Grade 3 time worksheets cover it properly.
▸Do these worksheets use pictures of clocks?
Yes — the Reading a Clock Face sub-skill prints a dial beside every question, with both hands drawn and the twelve numbers around the rim. The words deliberately do not say where the hands point, because reading that off the dial is the skill. The other sub-skills are digits and words: elapsed time, am and pm, the calendar and the 24-hour clock do not need a picture.
▸What do the five sub-skills generate?
Reading a Clock Face turns hand positions into a time. Time in Words moves between digits and words. Ordering Times asks which time is earlier, latest, or puts three in order. AM and PM matches times to the morning, afternoon or evening. Calendar and Dates handles days and months.
▸How many time questions should a first grader do at once?
Eight to twelve is a comfortable session. Use the question-count stepper to go as low as four for a quick daily starter, and press Shuffle for a completely fresh set at the same level tomorrow.
▸Are the answers printed on the same page?
Only if you want them. Tick the answer key box and the answers print on a separate page, so you can hand out the questions and keep the key, or let the child self-check when they have finished.
