Geometry Practice

Grade 3 • 2D Shape Properties • Name the shape from its clues
Name:Date:

Read each clue and write which flat shape it describes.

  1. 1) A shape has 3 straight sides and each of its angles measures 60°. What is its name?
    Answer:
  1. 2) A closed shape has 8 straight sides, and they are not all the same length. What is its name?
    Answer:
  1. 3) A closed shape has 5 straight sides, and they are not all the same length. What is its name?
    Answer:
  1. 4) A shape has 4 straight sides that are all the same length, and every one of its angles measures 90°. What is its name?
    Answer:
  1. 5) A shape has 3 straight sides and exactly 2 of them are equal. What is its name?

  1. 6) A closed shape has 6 straight sides, and they are not all the same length. What is its name?
    Answer:
  1. 7) A shape has no straight sides, and every point on its edge is the same distance from its centre. What is its name?
    Answer:
  1. 8) A shape has 4 straight sides and 4 right angles. Its opposite sides are equal, but its 4 sides are not all equal. What is its name?

Frequently asked questions

▸What geometry should a Grade 3 student know?

Grade 3 usually covers perimeter of rectangles and squares, and naming two-dimensional shapes from their sides, corners and angles. These worksheets do both on separate sheets — Perimeter and 2D Shape Properties — alongside Area of Rectangles, 3D Solids and Symmetry. Each sheet carries its own three levels, so the level control changes how hard that skill is rather than which skill you get.

▸How do you find the perimeter of a rectangle?

Add all four sides. Because opposite sides of a rectangle are equal, you can add the length and the width and then double the total: a 9 cm by 4 cm rectangle has a perimeter of 2 × (9 + 4) = 26 cm. The Rectangles level of Perimeter drills exactly that with small, friendly measurements.

▸Do these worksheets need diagrams or a ruler?

A diagram on some of them, and the sheet prints it for you. On Perimeter and Area of Rectangles the shape is drawn to scale at the lower levels, with the measurements written on it rather than in the sentence, because reading a length off a shape is part of the skill. The top level of each of those two turns the question round — it gives the perimeter or the area in words and asks for a side back, so there is nothing to draw. 2D Shape Properties and Symmetry draw the shape at level 1 and are in words above it. No ruler is needed: every number a question uses is printed. 3D Solids is written entirely in words at every level. Everything still prints in black and white on any printer.

▸How many questions should a Grade 3 geometry sheet have?

Eight to twelve is a realistic sitting. Use the question-count stepper to size it, and press Shuffle for a brand new set at the same level tomorrow — the practice never has to repeat itself.
