Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula — not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence →
More Grade 4 handwriting skills
Each one generates a different kind of question, with its own three levels and answer key.
- SentencesA full everyday sentence, holding size and spacing steady from the capital to the full stop.
- Proverbs and SayingsSayings that break in two across a comma — the pause a fast hand usually leaves out.
- Longest WordsNine-letter words: the longest a ruled row holds twice, and the hardest test of even spacing.
- Letter PatternsThe awkward strings: silent letters in ough and eigh, and the -shus endings that sound alike.
Frequently asked questions
▸What handwriting is expected in Grade 4?
In most curricula, fluent cursive (or fluent print where cursive is not taught) with all letters correctly joined or formed, consistent size and slant, and enough speed that writing keeps pace with thinking. The focus is sustaining legibility across full sentences, not perfecting single letters.
▸My child writes neatly but very slowly — how do I build speed?
Speed follows fluency, so practise little and often rather than pushing pace directly. Use Copy only sheets of 4–6 sentences, and time the same shared-link worksheet every couple of weeks — because the sentences are identical, faster completion at the same legibility is real, measurable progress.
▸Can I make cursive practice sheets specifically?
Yes. Set the Handwriting style menu to Cursive and every model and copying line uses joined letterforms. Combine it with the Trace then copy support level for joins that are still developing, or Copy only once your child writes cursive comfortably.
▸Should we keep practising print in Grade 4?
Yes — print stays useful for labels, forms, and anything meant to be read by others quickly. Switch the Handwriting style menu back to Standard print for a session now and then so both hands stay legible; keeping the two available means neither slips.
▸How many sentences should a Grade 4 sheet have?
4–6 longer sentences per session works well — enough to build stamina, short enough that the final line is still careful. Set the count with the stepper and use Shuffle for different sentences at the same settings the next day.
