Frequently asked questions
▸What measurement skills are expected in Grade 4?
Converting between mixed units and a single unit in both directions, and adding or subtracting measurements written in mixed units with regrouping. Compound Measurements covers the conversions and Adding and Subtracting Measurements covers the arithmetic.
▸How do you write 3 m 40 cm in centimeters?
Convert the whole meters first — 3 m is 300 cm — then add the leftover 40 cm, giving 340 cm. That is the Two units into one level of Compound Measurements, using length, mass and capacity in turn.
▸How do you subtract measurements like 6 kg 50 g − 4 kg 650 g?
Break one whole kilogram into 1000 g so the grams can be taken away: 6 kg 50 g becomes 5 kg 1050 g, then 1050 − 650 = 400 g and 5 − 4 = 1 kg, so the answer is 1 kg 400 g. Converting both amounts to grams first works just as well.
▸Do the answers always come out as whole numbers?
Yes. Every quantity is built from whole units and clean remainders, so answers are exact whole numbers or a tidy mixed pair like 5 m 65 cm — no decimals and no rounding at this grade.
