Frequently asked questions
βΈWhat time topics are covered in Grade 4?
Durations written in hours and minutes, reading and calculating with the 24-hour clock, and adding a length of time to a clock time so that it crosses noon or midnight. Elapsed Time in Hours and Minutes, The 24-Hour Clock and Later Times take those three in turn, each on its own sheet.
βΈHow do you convert to the 24-hour clock?
Morning times keep the same hour with a leading zero, so 7:45 am is 07:45. From 1:00 pm onwards, add twelve to the hour, so 4:20 pm becomes 16:20. Midnight is 00:00 and midday is 12:00.
βΈHow do you work out a duration that passes midday?
Split the duration at 12:00. Find how long it is from the start time to noon, take that off the total, and add whatever is left to 12:00. A start of 10:35 am with 3 hours 50 minutes gives 1 hour 25 minutes to noon and 2 hours 25 minutes after it, so it finishes at 2:25 pm.
βΈWhy should answers be in hours and minutes rather than minutes?
Because that is how timetables, journeys and school days are described, and because it stops children treating an hour as if it had a hundred minutes. Grade 3 sheets answer in minutes; Grade 4 is the year the two-unit answer becomes the standard.
βΈCan I use these sheets for timetable practice?
Yes. The Calculate on the 24-hour clock level of The 24-Hour Clock is built from journeys and events with a start time and a duration, the start time and the answer both on 24-hour readings, which is the same reading a bus or train timetable asks for. Press Shuffle for a fresh set at the same level.
