Grade 7 Word Problems Worksheets β€” Proportion, Discount & Profit (Printable)

Grade 7 word problems put proportional reasoning to work with money: scaling prices in proportion, finding sale prices after a discount, and calculating profit from buying and selling. This generator produces templated stories at that level, each with working space and an Answer line, so the setup, the calculation, and the final amount all live on one page.

Six sub-skills are offered at this grade and the page opens on Percent Stories, where the difficulty control steps from Percent of an amount, to Find the percent, to Two percents in one story. Proportion Stories, Discount & Sale Price, Profit Stories, Rates & Speed and Multi-Step Problems are separate sheets with three levels of their own. Pick the sub-skill, set how many problems you want with the stepper, and switch on the answer key before printing. The preview and the downloadable PDF always match, and the shareable link reproduces the exact same worksheet β€” handy for running one version across a class and again later as a re-test.

What each level generates

Grade 7 percent stories β€” the exact skill behind each difficulty setting, straight from the generator.

  1. Level 1Percent of an amount
  2. Level 2Find the percent
  3. Level 3Two percents in one story

Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula β€” not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence β†’

Where Grade 7 raises the bar

Most Grade 7 curricula apply proportional relationships to real money contexts. On these sheets that shows up directly: Proportion Stories scales a known unit price up to a new quantity, Discount & Sale Price takes a percent off a marked price to find what you actually pay, and Profit Stories multiplies the per-item margin by the number of items sold. Every result is a whole-dollar amount by construction, so the reasoning stays in focus.

The skill on display β€” find one unit, then scale; or find one item's change, then total it β€” is the same proportional move Grade 7 applies to percent change, tax, and tip problems across the year. Practising it on clean money stories makes the structure of the setup automatic before the numbers get messier.

Set it up, then check it

By Grade 7 the goal is a solver who sets up quickly and checks the result. For a discount, remember you pay (100 βˆ’ percent) percent, so a 25%-off item costs 75% of the marked price β€” an answer above the original price is wrong on sight. For profit, confirm the selling price is above the cost before multiplying; a negative margin means the numbers were swapped.

For every problem, write the unit value first β€” the price of one item, or the margin on one item β€” then scale. The perennial mistake is scaling before that unit is right, so keep the routine of underlining the question and naming what one unit is worth. Use Shuffle for fresh daily sets and a fixed shared link for the fortnightly timed check, so gains reflect skill rather than memorised problems.

Frequently asked questions

β–ΈWhat should a Grade 7 student be able to do with word problems?

Scale prices in proportion, find sale prices after a percent discount, and work out profit from buying and selling. The Proportion Stories, Discount & Sale Price and Profit Stories sub-skills target those problems; Proportion Stories' Inverse proportion level uses workers and hours instead of money.

β–ΈAre these money word problems?

Largely. Proportion Stories scales unit prices (except its Inverse proportion level, which uses workers and hours), Discount & Sale Price applies a percent off a marked price, and Profit Stories combines cost, selling price, and quantity, all in whole-dollar amounts. Percent Stories, Rates & Speed and Multi-Step Problems at this grade are not all money-based, so pick by sub-skill if you want money specifically.

β–ΈCan I make the stories easier to read for students who struggle with dense text?

Yes. Turn on the easy-read font option and the problems print in a clearer, more widely spaced typeface, which helps students who lose their place in longer wording without changing the maths.

β–ΈHow many word problems should a Grade 7 worksheet have?

6–10 is a solid session because each problem carries reading, a setup (most often proportional) and computation. Use the question-count stepper to size it; the sheet holds up to 12 if you want a longer set.

β–ΈDo these worksheets include integers or algebra?

No. They focus on percent, rate, proportion, discount and profit, plus multi-step stories (one level uses a percent, the others whole-number steps). Integer, ratio, percentage, and pre-algebra practice each have their own generators on the site, so you can target those separately.
