Grade 1 Addition Worksheets — Facts Within 20, Printable PDF

Grade 1 is the year addition facts start becoming automatic: sums within 20, doubles, and making ten. Make Ten to Add covers exactly that — two levels on the single-digit facts that cross ten, and a third that takes the same method past a bigger ten — while Add Without Regrouping, Adding Tens and Hundreds, Missing Number and Addition Stories each have a page of their own. The sheet refreshes instantly as you adjust the controls. Share or bookmark the link and you get the identical worksheet back — same problems, same order — which makes re-testing simple.

What each level generates

Grade 1 make ten to add — the exact skill behind each difficulty setting, straight from the generator.

  1. Level 1Crossing ten
  2. Level 2Make ten
  3. Level 3Make the next ten

Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula — not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence →

The Grade 1 addition goals

Most Grade 1 curricula aim for fluency with sums to 10 and accurate (if slower) addition within 20 by year-end. The workhorses are strategies, not memorization alone: counting on from the larger number, using doubles (6 + 6) to solve near-doubles (6 + 7), and making ten (8 + 5 as 8 + 2 + 3).

A daily 10–15 problem sheet from Make Ten to Add is the right dose. Fact families help too — when 9 + 4 appears, ask what 4 + 9 is, and the sheet does double duty.

Home routines that build fluency

Run the same short sheet at the same time each day — after breakfast, before screens — and let Shuffle produce a fresh set at identical settings each morning so no answers are remembered from yesterday. Tick the answer key box and the key prints on its own final page, so a parent can check quickly or an older sibling can play teacher.

Watch for over-reliance on counting from one, which shows up as long pauses on small facts. If 3 + 8 takes a ten-count, practice "start big, count on" out loud. Move on to Add Without Regrouping — a two-digit number with a one-digit number underneath — only when sums within 20 are mostly answered inside a few seconds.

Frequently asked questions

▸What addition should a Grade 1 student know?

By year-end, most curricula expect fluency with sums to 10 and reliable addition within 20 using strategies like counting on and making ten. The Make Ten to Add skill drills that strategy directly, and Add Without Regrouping carries the same year on into column work.

▸How many problems should a 6-year-old do per sheet?

10–15 works well. Set the count with the stepper — short daily sheets beat one long weekly session for building fact fluency.

▸How does the answer key work?

Tick the answer key option before you download. The key prints on a separate page with numbered answers, so you can hold it back while your child works and check together afterwards.

▸Can two children get different worksheets at the same level?

Yes — press Shuffle between prints. Each press generates a brand-new problem set at the same skill and level, and each version has its own link if you want to reprint either one exactly.

▸Will this match what my child does at school?

The skills offered here — making ten, column addition without regrouping, adding whole tens, missing numbers and word problems — mirror the sequence most English-language curricula use, so the sheets slot alongside almost any Grade 1 program.
