Grade 1 Place Value Worksheets β Tens and Ones PDF
Place value is the idea that makes every later number skill possible: in 47 the 4 is not four, it is four tens. Grade 1 stays inside two-digit numbers, and the work is split across six separate sheets: Tens and Ones, Build a Number, Expanded Form, Number Words, Comparing Numbers and Ordering Numbers. Choose the skill you want first β each one prints on its own and carries its own three levels.
On Tens and Ones those levels run "Which digit is in this place", then "Which place is this digit in", then "Split into tens and ones"; every other sheet has three of its own. Set how many questions you want and the preview redraws as you go. Tick the answer key box and the answers print on a separate page, so a parent can mark in seconds. The link in the address bar rebuilds the same sheet later, and Shuffle produces a fresh set at the same level.

Each one generates a different kind of question, with its own three levels and answer key.
- Tens and OnesRead the tens and the ones inside a two-digit number.
- Build a NumberPut a number together from its hundreds, tens and ones.
- Expanded FormWrite a number as the sum of what each of its digits is worth.
- Number WordsRead and write numbers in words as well as in digits.
- Comparing NumbersDecide which of two numbers is greater, working from the biggest place.
- Ordering NumbersPut three numbers in order, smallest first or largest first.
What each level generates
Grade 1 tens and ones β the exact skill behind each difficulty setting, straight from the generator.
- Level 1Which digit is in this place
- Level 2Which place is this digit in
- Level 3Split into tens and ones
Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula β not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence β
What Grade 1 place value looks like
First grade treats a two-digit number as a bundle of tens plus some loose ones. Tens and Ones asks that directly β "how many tens are in 47?" β because a child who answers 4 has understood that the left digit counts groups, not single things. Build a Number runs the idea backwards: given 4 tens and 7 ones, write the number. Doing both directions in the same week is what makes the idea stick, and they are two separate sheets so you can print either one on its own.
A realistic year-end target is reading, building and comparing any number to 99 using tens and ones, and saying which is bigger without counting up from one. If a child reads 47 as "four, seven", pause the worksheet and rebuild the number with ten-sticks or bundled straws until the left digit stops being a separate small number.
Using these sheets at home or in class
Keep sessions short β eight to twelve questions is plenty at this age, and the count stepper goes down to six for a quick warm-up. Read the first two questions aloud together, then let the child work alone; the sheet is designed so the reading load never gets in the way of the maths.
Comparing Numbers opens on two numbers with different leading digits, then tightens to a pair made from the same two digits, such as 47 and 74. That second step is the point of the sheet: the only way to answer is to look at which digit sits in the tens place, so a child cannot get it right by guessing the longer-looking number. If comparing is still shaky, spend another week on Tens and Ones and Build a Number before moving on. Expanded Form and Number Words cover the same two-digit range in the other two notations, and Ordering Numbers extends the comparison from two numbers to three.
Frequently asked questions
βΈWhat is place value in Grade 1?
It is the understanding that the position of a digit tells you its size. In 47, the 4 means four tens (forty) and the 7 means seven ones. Grade 1 work stays with two-digit numbers and the tens and ones places only.
βΈWhich place value sheets does Grade 1 have?
Six, each printed separately. Tens and Ones asks how many tens or ones are in a two-digit number. Build a Number gives the tens and ones and asks for the number they make. Expanded Form writes 45 as 40 + 5 and back again. Number Words moves between 45 and forty-five. Comparing Numbers puts two numbers side by side, and Ordering Numbers sorts three. Every sheet carries its own three levels, so the level control changes the difficulty of the skill you are on rather than switching to a different skill.
βΈHow do I help a child who says 47 is "four and seven"?
Build 47 with objects grouped in tens β straws, cubes or coins β so the four groups are visible. Then point at each digit and name it aloud: four tens, seven ones. Return to the Tens and Ones sheet once the grouping is clear.
βΈHow many questions should a Grade 1 worksheet have?
Eight to twelve keeps attention and still gives useful practice. Use the count stepper to size the sheet, and press Shuffle for a brand new set at the same level tomorrow rather than reusing the marked one.
