Grade 1 Data Handling Worksheets β€” Free Printable PDF

First grade is where a child first meets information that has been collected and written down. A line like "Favourite pet: cats 6, dogs 9, fish 4" is a whole survey in one sentence, and answering from it is a genuinely different act from working out a sum: the numbers are given, and the work is deciding which of them the question is about.

These sheets keep the record to three categories and the counts under ten, so the reading is the challenge and the arithmetic never is. Choose the sub-skill, set how many questions you want, and tick the answer key to print the answers on their own page.

What each level generates

Grade 1 read a record β€” the exact skill behind each difficulty setting, straight from the generator.

  1. Level 1Find one value
  2. Level 2Most and least chosen
  3. Level 3Count the even ones

Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula β€” not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence β†’

What Grade 1 data work actually asks

The first-grade expectation is modest and specific: organise and interpret data with up to three categories, and answer how many are in each category and how many were counted in all. That is exactly the ladder here β€” Read a Record finds one named value, Total a Record adds every category, and Name the Category works backwards from a number to the label it belongs to.

That last one matters more than it looks. Reading left to right, from a category to its number, is the easy direction; going right to left, from a number back to its category, is where a child proves they are reading a record rather than copying the nearest digit. If a child can do the first and not the second, they have not yet understood that the two columns belong to each other.

Reading before drawing

A common first-grade sequence is to draw a graph before being able to read one, which puts the colouring in front of the thinking. These sheets do the reading half only, and they do it in words, so a child who is still slow with a pencil is not held back from the mathematics.

Keep sessions short β€” eight to ten questions is plenty at this age β€” and read the record aloud together on the first few. Once a child can point to the answer before you finish the question, move on to Total a Record, where every category has to be used rather than just one.

Frequently asked questions

β–ΈWhat is data handling in Grade 1?

It is reading information that has been collected and written down. In first grade that means a short record of up to three categories β€” for example how many children chose each pet β€” and answering how many chose one, how many were counted altogether, and which category a given number belongs to.

β–ΈAre there bar charts or pictograms on these sheets?

No. Every sheet is a written record, such as "Fruit eaten: apples 4, pears 7, plums 3", and the questions are answered from the sentence. The skill practised is interpreting collected data, not drawing it.

β–ΈHow hard is the arithmetic?

Deliberately easy. Counts stay under ten and there are only three categories, so a total never goes far past twenty. The difficulty is in choosing what to do, which is the point of a data question.

β–ΈHow many questions should a Grade 1 sheet have?

Eight to ten is a sensible session. Use the question-count stepper to size the sheet, and press Shuffle for a completely fresh set at the same level tomorrow.

β–ΈIs this worksheet generator free?

Yes β€” free, no sign-up, and no watermark. The sheet is built in your browser, and the link in the address bar reprints the identical worksheet whenever you need it again.
