More Grade 3 measurement skills
Each one generates a different kind of question, with its own three levels and answer key.
- Length UnitsChange a length between millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers.
- Mass: Grams and KilogramsChange a weight between milligrams, grams and kilograms.
- Capacity: Milliliters and LitersChange an amount of liquid between milliliters and liters.
- Compound MeasurementsRewrite measurements like 3 m 40 cm using one unit, and back again.
- Comparing MeasurementsDecide which of two measurements is bigger when the units differ.
- Ordering MeasurementsPut three or four measurements in order when the units are mixed.
- Reading Scales and RulersWork out what a ruler, kitchen scale or measuring jug is showing.
Frequently asked questions
βΈWhat metric units are taught in Grade 3?
Millimeters, centimeters and meters for length, grams and kilograms for mass, and milliliters and liters for capacity. These worksheets convert in one step between each pair, and the Comparing Measurements sheet compares two measurements written in different units.
βΈHow do you convert grams to kilograms?
There are 1000 grams in a kilogram, so divide by 1000 going to kilograms and multiply by 1000 going to grams. 4000 g is 4 kg, and 6 kg is 6000 g. The conversion sheets β Length Units, Mass, Capacity and Units of Time β drill the dividing direction on its own at their second level.
βΈWhy do children mix up multiplying and dividing in conversions?
Because the rule is memorised without a picture of size. Fixing it takes one question: will the answer be a bigger number or a smaller one? Smaller units always need a bigger number, which is what the first level of each conversion sheet reinforces on every line.
βΈCan I make a worksheet with only length, or only mass?
The Compare, Order, Compound Measurements and Reading Scales sheets mix the unit families deliberately, so children must decide which relationship applies rather than switching to autopilot. If you want a single family, choose the Length, Mass, Capacity or Time sub-skill.
