Frequently asked questions

▸What money problems should a Grade 3 student solve?

Multi-step shopping problems: a total made from more than one purchase, the cost of several identical items, and the change from a larger note. Adding Prices, Buying Several Items and Giving Change move through exactly that order, finishing with change from $20.

▸How do you multiply money amounts?

Multiply the dollars and the cents separately, then combine: three items at $1.45 each is 3 lots of $1 plus 3 lots of 45c, which is $3 plus $1.35, so $4.35. Working entirely in cents and converting at the end gives the same result.

▸How do you work out change from $20?

Count up from the total to the next whole dollar, then up to twenty. A $13.60 bill needs forty cents to reach $14 and six dollars to reach $20, so the change is $6.40. The Giving Change sheet drills that method.

▸Do these worksheets show your working?

Each question is printed as a list item with blank space underneath, so there is room to lay out the two or three steps rather than only writing an answer. That space is where multi-step money problems are actually won.
