Grade 4 Mental Maths Worksheets β All Four Operations
By Grade 4 a child is expected to add, subtract, multiply and divide in their head, and to use place value to scale a known fact β if 6 Γ 7 is instant, then 6 Γ 70 should be too. Seven skills cover that ground: Times Table Facts, Division Facts, Multiply by 10 and 100, Adding in Your Head, Taking Away in Your Head, Doubles and Halves, and Mixed Chains β the sheet where the operations meet, as in 84 Γ· 7 + 46.
Every division is built from its answer, so nothing ever leaves a decimal, and the one level that does leave a remainder β the middle step of Division Facts β says so in its instruction line. Pick a skill and a level, size the sheet with the stepper, tick the answer key, and keep the link to reprint the identical set for a class or a re-test.

Each one generates a different kind of question, with its own three levels and answer key.
- Times Table FactsStraight table recall, the missing factor, and three numbers multiplied at once.
- Division FactsDivision pulled straight out of the times tables: the easy divisors, then a leftover, then the missing number.
- Multiply by 10 and 100Shift the digits: multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 in a single step.
- Adding in Your HeadAdd two numbers without writing anything down, first without carrying and then with.
- Taking Away in Your HeadSubtract in your head, including the exchange that trips most children up.
- Doubles and HalvesDouble a number, halve a number, then work backwards from the answer.
- Mixed ChainsTwo or three operations in a row, held in your head and worked left to right, bracket first where there is one.
What each level generates
Grade 4 times table facts β the exact skill behind each difficulty setting, straight from the generator.
- Level 1Table facts
- Level 2Missing factor
- Level 3Three factors
Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula β not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence β
What Grade 4 mental maths should cover
Grade 4 fluency has four strands: recall of all multiplication and division facts to 12, addition and subtraction of larger numbers using place value, scaling facts by ten and a hundred, and choosing sensibly between a mental and a written method. Multiply by 10 and 100 targets the scaling strand head on: times ten at the first level, times a hundred at the second, and dividing by both at the third, so the shift is practised in each direction.
The division questions are the ones to watch. A child who knows 6 Γ 8 = 48 but hesitates on 48 Γ· 6 has learned the tables as a one-way list rather than as a relationship. When that shows up, say the fact family out loud together β 6, 8, 48 in all four arrangements β before running the sheet again with a new shuffle.
Scaling a known fact
The single most valuable Grade 4 habit is turning a known fact into a bigger one. 40 Γ 7 is 4 Γ 7 with a zero attached; 360 Γ· 60 is 36 Γ· 6; 430 + 230 is 43 + 23 in tens. Teach it as "do the easy version, then put the size back", and check the size out loud, because the common slip is a lost or an extra zero rather than a wrong fact.
On Mixed Chains, the middle level combines a product or a quotient with an addition or subtraction, and the top level runs four numbers in a row. The multiplication or division always comes first, matching the usual order of operations, so the sheet doubles as quiet preparation for the formal rules a child meets a year or two later. Keep chain sheets to twenty questions and mark them together.
Frequently asked questions
βΈWhat mental maths should a Grade 4 student know?
All four operations: multiplication and division facts to 12, addition and subtraction of two- and three-digit numbers, and scaling facts by 10 and 100 β for example 47 Γ 10 or 800 Γ· 100. Seven separate skills cover them here, and Mixed Chains is the one that puts more than one operation on a line.
βΈDo any of the divisions leave a remainder?
Only on one level. The middle level of Division Facts is built from a quotient and a remainder and answers like 7 R 5. Everywhere else the dividend is built by multiplying the answer by the divisor, so the result is an exact whole number and the focus stays on recall speed.
βΈWhat does the Multiply by 10 and 100 skill cover?
Shifting the digits: level 1 multiplies by ten, level 2 by a hundred, and level 3 divides by both β 47 Γ 10, 47 Γ 100, 470 Γ· 10, 800 Γ· 100. It drills the place-value scaling habit that turns a known fact into a bigger one without extra work.
βΈHow do I reuse the same worksheet later?
The link in your address bar encodes the skill, level, count and shuffle, so opening it again rebuilds the identical sheet and the identical answer key. Bookmark it for a fair re-test, or press Shuffle for a fresh set at the same skill and level.
