Grade 5 Mental Maths Worksheets — Fractions & Doubling

Grade 5 mental maths widens beyond the four operations. Alongside multiplying and dividing larger numbers, a child is expected to double and halve fluently and to find a fraction of an amount in their head — a quarter of 60, three fifths of 45. Each of those has a sheet of its own: Fractions of Amounts, Multiply in Your Head, Division Facts, Multiply by 10 and 100, Doubles and Halves, and Mixed Chains.

On Fractions of Amounts the three levels run unit fractions, then two or more parts, then working back from the part to the whole amount; Mixed Chains builds multi-step questions such as 34 × 6 − 47. Amounts are chosen to divide exactly, so answers are whole numbers — the one exception is the middle level of Division Facts, which asks for the remainder. Nothing needs a calculator.

What each level generates

Grade 5 fractions of amounts — the exact skill behind each difficulty setting, straight from the generator.

  1. Level 1Unit fractions
  2. Level 2Two or more parts
  3. Level 3Find the whole amount

Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula — not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence →

What Grade 5 mental maths should cover

Three capabilities define Grade 5: multiplying and dividing beyond the basic facts (34 × 7, 468 ÷ 12), doubling and halving any two- or three-digit number, and finding a unit or non-unit fraction of a quantity. The fraction skill is the pivot for the year, because it is the same calculation a child will meet again as a percentage, a discount and a scale factor.

The method is worth stating plainly: to find three fifths of 45, divide by the bottom number and multiply by the top. Divide by 5 to get 9, multiply by 3 to get 27. Children who try to multiply first often hit a number they cannot divide cleanly, so drilling the order — divide, then multiply — is what makes these questions mental rather than written.

Doubling, halving and why they matter

Doubling and halving look like babyish skills next to long division, but they carry an enormous amount of Grade 5 arithmetic. Halving is how a child finds 50%, a half, and a quarter (halve twice). Doubling turns × 4 into two doubles and × 8 into three, and it makes 25 × 16 tractable in the head by halving one side and doubling the other until the numbers are friendly.

Use Doubles and Halves as a warm-up and Fractions of Amounts as the main event, then move to Mixed Chains once both are quick. A sheet of thirty questions should take about ten minutes on either of the first two; chains take longer, so cut the count rather than rushing them. Tick the answer key so a child can check a row at a time and spot which skill is slipping.

Frequently asked questions

▸What mental maths topics come up in Grade 5?

Multiplying and dividing beyond the basic facts, doubling and halving two- and three-digit numbers, finding fractions of amounts such as 1/4 of 60 or 3/5 of 45, and mixed chains that use brackets and the order of operations. Six sheets cover those skills, each with its own three levels.

▸How do you find a fraction of a number in your head?

Divide by the denominator, then multiply by the numerator. For 3/5 of 45: 45 ÷ 5 = 9, then 9 × 3 = 27. Every amount on these sheets divides exactly, so the answer is always a whole number.

▸Why practise doubling and halving at Grade 5?

Because they unlock far more than they look like. Halving gives you a half, a quarter and 50% instantly, and doubling turns multiplying by 4 or 8 into two or three easy steps — both are the backbone of quick mental arithmetic later on.

▸What does the Mixed Chains sheet generate?

Two-operation chains at its middle level — 34 × 6 + 47, 468 ÷ 12 + 52 — with bracket chains below it, such as 754 − (318 + 207), where the bracket is worked first, and four numbers in a row above. Outside a bracket the multiplication or division always comes first, so no question is ambiguous, and every intermediate step stays a positive whole number.
