Frequently asked questions
βΈWhat decimal skills are expected in Grade 5?
Adding and subtracting decimals to hundredths with confidence, handling numbers written to different numbers of places, and multiplying or dividing by 10 and 100. Adding Decimals, Subtracting Decimals and Multiplying & Dividing by 10 and 100 cover that sequence, each on its own sheet.
βΈHow do you add decimals with different numbers of places?
Line up the decimal points, write a zero in any empty place so both numbers have the same length, then add as usual. For 6.4 + 2.35, write 6.40 + 2.35 and the columns behave normally. The Carry across the point level of Adding Decimals drills exactly this case.
βΈDoes the decimal point move when you multiply by 10?
It is clearer to say the digits move and the point stays put. Multiplying by 10 shifts each digit one place to the left, so 3.47 becomes 34.7; dividing by 10 shifts them back the other way. Multiplying & Dividing by 10 and 100 practises both directions on the same sheet.
βΈCan I print these Grade 5 decimal sheets without the answers?
Yes. The answer key is a tick box, and when it is on the answers always start on their own page, so you can hand out the questions and keep the key. The same link reproduces both whenever you need them.
