Grade 6 Spelling Worksheets β€” Academic Vocabulary Copywork PDF

Grade 6 spelling moves off the pattern lists and onto the academic words students now meet in every subject β€” analysis, hypothesis, parallel, necessary β€” long words where sounding out only gets you halfway. This page lays them out in trace-and-copy rows so a middle-schooler slows right down and takes in every letter; Missing Letters, Unscramble the Word, Choose the Correct Spelling and Use the Word in a Sentence are separate Grade 6 pages built from the same word bands.

Set the difficulty and word count below and the sheet rebuilds instantly, ready to print or save as a PDF. Because this is handwriting copy practice there is no answer key to withhold β€” the printed model word at the start of each row is the target to match, which makes the sheet self-checking.

What Grade 6 spelling should cover

Middle-school language standards drop the weekly phonics pattern and instead expect students to spell grade-appropriate words correctly in their own writing and to use common Greek and Latin roots and affixes as spelling clues. That means words like describe, government, and receive have to be reliable, not just recognisable. The tell-tale Grade 6 error is the unstressed vowel β€” the schwa in seperate, definate, or independant β€” where the ear gives no help and only a clear visual memory does.

On level suits most Grade 6 students; drop to Core words after a break to rebuild confidence on shorter academic words, and reach for Challenge words once a full sheet comes back clean two sessions running. Keep lists to ten or so on the stepper β€” copywork of long words is slow, deliberate work and a shorter list gets more honest attention than a crammed one.

Using word structure, not just memory

Long words become manageable when they are broken into meaningful parts. Before the copy pass, have your student split each word at its root and affixes β€” un / usual, tele / graph, gov / ern / ment β€” and say the chunks aloud. Copying a word you have taken apart fixes both the spelling and the meaning, which is exactly what the standards are after.

In class, share the page link and every student prints the identical list; press Shuffle once for a parallel version to use as the end-of-week check. If handwriting legibility is the real battle, switch on the handwriting-style font so the model word is formed the way you want it copied. Watch which part of a word carries the errors β€” if it is always the ending, spend a session sorting words by their suffix before writing any of them out.

Frequently asked questions

β–ΈWhat spelling words should a Grade 6 student practise?

The multisyllabic academic vocabulary that fills their subject work β€” analysis, government, describe, necessary β€” plus words built from common roots and affixes. The Grade 6 band is drawn from exactly that everyday academic tier rather than from spelling-test trivia.

β–ΈThere's no answer key β€” how does my child check the words?

Trace and Write is a handwriting copy sheet, so the correct spelling is already printed at the start of every row: your student copies against that model and checks letter by letter. Unscramble prints a word bank above the jumbles and Use the Word in a Sentence prints the model word, so they need no key either; Choose the Correct Spelling prints the right spelling among its options without marking it, and Missing Letters does not print the whole correct word, so check both against a dictionary.

β–ΈMy child spells it 'emphasise', not 'emphasize' β€” is that marked wrong?

No. Both are correct English and we accept both. A handful of Grade 6 words are spelled differently in different countries β€” emphasize and emphasise, analyze and analyse β€” and where one lands on your sheet the instruction line at the top prints the pair, so whoever marks the sheet can see at a glance that either form counts. We do not pick a country's convention and mark the rest of the world wrong. The one exception is the Unscramble sheet, which leaves those words out altogether: a jumble is a fixed set of letters, so it cannot honestly offer a choice between a z and an s. Those words still appear on the other four Grade 6 sheets.

β–ΈHow many words make a good Grade 6 list?

Around eight to twelve. Academic words are long, so careful copying of a modest list beats rushing through a big one. Set the number on the word-count stepper to fit the time you have.

β–ΈCan my whole class work from the same list?

Yes. The web address stores your exact worksheet, so sharing the link hands every student the identical sheet β€” handy for a common homework list or a fair weekly check. Shuffle then gives you a fresh selection at the same difficulty for a retest.

β–ΈDo I need an account to make these worksheets?

No. Everything runs in your browser with nothing stored on a server, there is no sign-up or watermark, and you can print unlimited lists free β€” the link itself is the only save file.
