Grade 6 Mental Maths Worksheets — Percents & Squares
Grade 6 mental maths is about the shortcuts that make later algebra and problem solving quick. Square numbers should be recalled, not worked out; a percentage of an amount should come from the 10% anchor rather than a written multiplication. These sheets drill both, alongside larger multiplication and division and the chains that combine them.
Percents of Amounts and Squares each have a sheet of their own, next to Multiply in Your Head, Division Facts, Doubles and Halves, and Mixed Chains — where the multi-step challenges live, such as 342 ÷ 6 + 88, and, at its first level, a square and a bracket such as 24² − (130 + 215). Squares reaches two steps of its own at the top level, like 18² + 38. Percent amounts are chosen so every answer is a whole number, the only division that leaves anything over is the middle level of Division Facts, and no calculator is needed anywhere.

Each one generates a different kind of question, with its own three levels and answer key.
- Percents of AmountsBuild percents from the mental anchors — halve for 50%, halve again for 25%, divide by ten for 10% — then work back to the whole.
- SquaresSquare numbers from memory, then one used inside a two-step calculation.
- Multiply in Your HeadBigger products with no written working — partition, use tens, find the missing factor.
- Division FactsDivision pulled straight out of the times tables: the easy divisors, then a leftover, then the missing number.
- Doubles and HalvesDouble a number, halve a number, then work backwards from the answer.
- Mixed ChainsTwo or three operations in a row, held in your head and worked left to right, bracket first where there is one.
What each level generates
Grade 6 percents of amounts — the exact skill behind each difficulty setting, straight from the generator.
- Level 1One step from an anchor
- Level 2Percents in steps of five
- Level 3Find the whole amount
Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula — not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence →
What Grade 6 mental maths should cover
Three things separate a fluent Grade 6 student from a slow one: instant recall of the square numbers, confident percentages of an amount, and the stamina to hold an intermediate result through a second operation. All three are generated here, on the Squares, Percents of Amounts and Mixed Chains sheets. The squares run well past the tables, so a child meets 17² and 24² at the first level and everything up to 45² at the second, rather than stopping at 12².
Percentages are the skill with the widest reach — discounts, tax, test scores, statistics and interest all sit on top of it. The reliable mental route is the 10% anchor: divide by ten, then build. 35% of 80 is 8 + 8 + 8 + 4 = 28. A child who reaches for long multiplication for 35% of 80 has the arithmetic but not the fluency, and that is exactly what a short daily sheet fixes.
Squares, near-squares and building percents
Squares are worth memorising to 20 and deriving beyond it. Two derivations cover almost everything: numbers ending in 5 (25² is 2 × 3 = 6 with 25 on the end, so 625), and near-squares (21² is 20² + 20 + 21 = 441). Show both once and the top level of Squares — 18² + 38 — stops being a written calculation.
For percents, teach a small toolkit rather than a rule: 10% is a tenth, 5% is half of that, 1% is a hundredth, 25% is a quarter, 50% is a half, and everything else is a combination. Ask for the route as well as the answer for the first few questions — "I found 10%, tripled it, added a half of the ten" — because the route is what will still be there in a year.
Frequently asked questions
▸What should Grade 6 mental maths include?
Square numbers, percents of amounts, and multiplication, division and subtraction with larger numbers — plus the ability to chain two of them together. Six sheets cover exactly that ground, each with three levels of its own.
▸How do you work out a percentage of a number mentally?
Start from 10% by dividing by ten, then build: double it for 20%, halve it for 5%, add the pieces for 35% or 75%. Every amount on these sheets is chosen so the answer lands on a whole number.
▸Which square numbers should a Grade 6 student know?
The squares to 15 by heart is a common target, with 16 to 20 close behind. Level 1 of the Squares sheet generates squares from 2 to 24 and level 2 goes from 25 to 45, so you can push recall well past the times tables.
▸Are these sheets suitable as a daily starter?
Yes — that is what a high question count and a shuffle button are for. Print thirty questions for a five-minute starter, press Shuffle for tomorrow's set at the same skill and level, and print the answer key for instant marking.
