Grade 7 Find the first wrong step (HOTQ) Worksheets
A worked answer with one wrong step in it. Find the first step that breaks the rule and write the step that belongs there.
Every sheet below is generated fresh with a matching answer key. Pick one of the three levels, preview it, and print or download the PDF β no account, no watermark. For the other grade 7 order of operations skills, see all order of operations worksheets.

Grade 7 Β· 3 pages Β· A4What each level generates
Grade 7 find the first wrong step (hotq) β the exact skill behind each difficulty setting, straight from the generator.
- Level 1A step taken out of turn
- Level 2A bracket in the working
- Level 3Equal ranks in the wrong order
Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula β not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence β
More Grade 7 order of operations skills
Each one generates a different kind of question, with its own three levels and answer key.
- Powers in ExpressionsSquares and cubes are worked out before multiplying, dividing, adding or subtracting.
- Brackets FirstWork out what is inside the brackets before you do anything else.
- Brackets Inside BracketsMore than one set of brackets β start with the innermost pair and work out.
- Two OperationsNo brackets: decide whether to multiply, divide, add or subtract first.
- Insert the BracketsPut one pair of brackets into each expression so the answer shown is correct.
- Evaluate with a VariablePut the given value in place of the letter, then use the order of operations.
- Which Step Comes FirstName the part you would work out first β no need to finish the sum.
Frequently asked questions
βΈWhat order of operations is expected in Grade 7?
Fast, accurate evaluation of multi-step, bracketed expressions that now include powers, because it underpins solving equations and substituting into formulas. Grade 7 adds squares β evaluated before Γ Γ· and after brackets β and is about applying the whole order fluently rather than learning it for the first time.
βΈWill the division always work out exactly?
Yes. Every problem is built so each division lands on a whole number, with no remainders, so a wrong answer signals a slip in the order or the arithmetic β not a division the student was never meant to attempt.
βΈHow is this different from the Grade 5 and 6 sheets?
The maths follows the same rule, but Grade 7 introduces powers β squares and cubes that must be evaluated after the brackets but before the multiplication and division β and leans on Level 3's multi-step expressions, expecting the speed and accuracy suited to pre-algebra rather than first exposure to the convention.
βΈCan I make the problems easier to read?
Yes β switch on the easy-read font for cleaner numerals and more spacing, which helps students who lose their place in long bracketed lines. The Large font size also opens the expressions out, while Small fits more per page.
βΈCan I get a fresh set with the same settings?
Press Shuffle. You get brand-new problems at the same grade, difficulty, and count, each with its own shareable link β handy for daily practice that never repeats.
βΈIs there a Grade 8 order of operations or BODMAS worksheet?
Yes β filed under Integers rather than under this topic, because Grade 8 applies the same rule to signed numbers. Start with Order of Operations with Integers at /worksheets/grade-8/integers/order-of-operations/, then Mixed Operations and Powers of Integers at the same grade. The rule is identical β brackets, then powers, then Γ and Γ·, then + and β β only the numbers change.
