Frequently asked questions
βΈWhat is elapsed time in Grade 3?
It is the amount of time between a start and an end time. Third graders usually work in minutes and are expected to handle spans that cross an o'clock, which the first two levels of Elapsed Time in Minutes do at this grade.
βΈHow do you work out elapsed time across the hour?
Count up to the next o'clock first, then add the remaining minutes. From 10:40 am to 11:25 am, that is 20 minutes to reach 11:00 and then 25 more, giving 45 minutes altogether.
βΈWhy are the answers always in minutes and not hours?
Keeping one unit makes the counting method transparent and matches typical Grade 3 expectations. When you want the two-unit answer, Elapsed Time in Hours and Minutes is a separate sheet at this grade, and it becomes the standard on the Grade 4 pages.
βΈHow long are the spans on Elapsed Time in Minutes?
Spans over an hour uses one, two or three hours plus extra minutes, so answers run from a little over an hour up to nearly four hours, always written in minutes. To the nearest minute is harder in a different way β the spans are shorter, but they no longer land on five-minute marks, so every one has to be counted exactly.
βΈDo the worksheets show working space?
Yes. Each question prints with blank space beneath it, which is enough room for an empty number line or a couple of counting-on jumps. Add the answer key to let a child check their own working.
