Grade 5 Β· 2 pages Β· A4What each level generates
Grade 5 doubles and halves β the exact skill behind each difficulty setting, straight from the generator.
- Level 1Double it
- Level 2Halve it
- Level 3Undo a double or a half
Grade levels follow the progression common to most English-language curricula β not one specific national curriculum. Every level shows exactly what it generates, so you can check the fit with your own program. See the full scope & sequence β
More Grade 5 mental maths skills
Each one generates a different kind of question, with its own three levels and answer key.
- Fractions of AmountsA half, a quarter or three fifths of an amount β and the amount you started with.
- Multiply in Your HeadBigger products with no written working β partition, use tens, find the missing factor.
- Division FactsDivision pulled straight out of the times tables: the easy divisors, then a leftover, then the missing number.
- Multiply by 10 and 100Shift the digits: multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 in a single step.
- Mixed ChainsTwo or three operations in a row, held in your head and worked left to right.
Frequently asked questions
βΈWhat mental maths topics come up in Grade 5?
Multiplying and dividing beyond the basic facts, doubling and halving two- and three-digit numbers, and finding fractions of amounts such as 1/4 of 60 or 3/5 of 45. Six sheets cover exactly those skills, each with its own three levels.
βΈHow do you find a fraction of a number in your head?
Divide by the denominator, then multiply by the numerator. For 3/5 of 45: 45 Γ· 5 = 9, then 9 Γ 3 = 27. Every amount on these sheets divides exactly, so the answer is always a whole number.
βΈWhy practise doubling and halving at Grade 5?
Because they unlock far more than they look like. Halving gives you a half, a quarter and 50% instantly, and doubling turns multiplying by 4 or 8 into two or three easy steps β both are the backbone of quick mental arithmetic later on.
βΈWhat does the Mixed Chains sheet generate?
Two-operation chains at its middle level β 34 Γ 6 + 47, 468 Γ· 12 + 52 β with add-and-take-away below it and four numbers in a row above. The multiplication or division comes first, so the order of operations never makes a question ambiguous, and every intermediate step stays a positive whole number.
